Late-Night Steak Dinner for One

You know the scenario…

Everyone else has eaten. The kids are in bed. Your partner is done. You’re hungry and—most importantly—on your own for dinner.

This isn’t a sad frozen-pizza moment. This is your time. Your dinner-for-one deserves a little glory. Here’s how to turn a 10-minute grocery run into a steakhouse plate—for yourself.

🛒 What You’ll Need
Lemon pepper (optional)
1 NY strip steak (look for a nice fat cap)
1 russet potato
1 heirloom tomato
Salt
Neutral oil (for fries)
Extra virgin olive oil (for the tomato)
Garlic powder (optional)
Paprika (optional)
Dried parsley (optional)

🔪 Order of Operations
1. Pick up supplies on your way home: steak, potato, tomato. That’s it.
2. Salt the steak generously on all sides. Place on a wire rack over a plate in the fridge while you deal with life.
3. When you’re ready: pat steak dry and season with garlic powder + lemon pepper. (If oven-baking fries, preheat to 425°F now.)
4. Fries time. Wash the potato, cut into thick fries (skin on), toss with oil, salt, garlic powder, paprika, parsley.
5. Cook fries: air fryer at 380°F for ~20 min (or roast in oven). Toss every 5 min if you remember.
6. Render fat: In a cast iron, stand steak on its fat cap side, medium-high heat. Once it sizzles and renders a nice pool of fat, lay steak flat and sear ~5–6 min per side (medium rare).
7. Rest steak. Meanwhile, slice tomato, salt, drizzle olive oil. Fries should be ready.
8. Plate it up: steak center stage, heirloom fanned on one side, fries piled high on the other. Add ketchup, steak sauce, whatever you need.

✨ Notes from the Dad Kitchen
Don’t splurge on filet—NY strip gives you flavor + fat.
Fries are flexible: wedges, shoestring, whatever.
Swap heirloom for any ripe tomato—just salt it well.

Nobody at the table. Just you. But trust me—your clients would still say:
“Not To My Taste.”
And that’s kind of the point.
